Abstract

538,568. Glucose. WALSH, J. F., and AMERICAN MAIZE-PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 6, 1940, No. 365. [Class 127] Syrup prepared from starch-conversion liquors by neutralizing, filtering, bleaching and concentrating, and containing 25-60 per cent glucose is treated to produce a stable dry product by dehydrating the syrup at a pH value of 3.5-5.5 in presence of .01-.03 per cent sulphur dioxide to a moisture content of less than 4 per cent. The sulphur dioxide may be obtained by addition of alkali metal bisulphite, and towards the end of the concentration the remaining sulphite is decomposed by addition of acetic, tartaric, sulphuric, hydrochloric or other acid. The dehydration is effected by concentration in vacuum pans to a moisture content of 6-7 per cent and then drying in thin films on a heated drum or other surface. The thick syrup is solidified by being spread in thin layers on chilled tables, rolls, or a thin metal band or screen, and the dried product is chipped or granulated.
