Abstract
538,535. Lasting shoes. MILLER, H. A. May 6, 1940, No. 8116. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1939. [Class 17 (i)] In lasting stitch-down shoes, cement is applied to the margin of the upper side of the sole and the lower margin of the inside of the upper, a last is clamped in proper position against the upper side of the sole, an upper is fitted on the last and the two cemented portions are pressed together. A suitable machine comprises an interchangeable support 22 for a sole 35 against which a last 33 is clamped by an arm 19, a lug 30 moving with the arm engaging a stop screw 28 to determine the angular position of the arm about a shaft 13, and gauges 36, 37 positioning the sole. At toe and heel ends plates 40, 57 formed with apertures corresponding to the toe and heel ends of the sole are loosely carried by slides reciprocated by levers 55, 73. At their inner ends the plates are urged upwardly by spring plungers 46, 65 against rollers 48, 67. The edges of the apertures are bevelled to the shape of the crease, and when the edges have been forced into the crease the plates are depressed by treadles connected to links 75. The shaft 13 is threaded at its lower portion and is provided with a hand-wheel so that the last may be clamped and released. The sides of the upper are lasted by hand.
