Abstract

538,128. Coating with metals. JOHNSON BRONZE CO. Jan. 20, 1940, No. 1233. Convention date, May 22, 1939. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Steel-backed lead-bronze bearings are made by grinding pre-cast bronze to a fine powder, applying this to a steel backing, and heating the whole in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. A strip of steel is cleaned and preferably coated with zinc chloride or other flux or plated with tin or copper. The bronze is ground so as to pass an 80-mesh sieve but not a 200-mesh one and may be sintered at 1300‹ F., in a reducing atmosphere, with a finer powder of copper to roughen the surfaces of the bronze particles or be merely mixed with such powder of copper, tin, zinc, aluminium or other metal. This powder is preferably applied and spread, 0.045-0.055 of an inch thick, by a mechanism through which the strip is fed. This is then passed through a hydrogen or other reducing or neutral furnace at 1250‹- 1500‹ F. The strip is then cold rolled, to reduce the thickness of the bronze to 0.025 of an inch, passed through another and similar furance, and finally cold rolled to reduce the thickness of the bronze to 0.005 of an inch and harden it. The strip can then be cut up and stamped. Graphite or other solid lubricant may be mixed with the bronze powder and, if the bronze layer is not consolidated too much by rolling it may be impregnated by dipping in oil.
