Abstract

536,048. Treating glass to disperse water drops falling thereon. CURRAN, W. E. Jan. 10, 1939, No. 35252/38. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XVI] In order that the surface of glass, films, and other transparent bodies may disperse drops of water falling on it into films and without impairing the transparency, substantially the entire surface has formed in or on it irregularities. These latter are stated to be of the order of .0001 millimetre and are formed for example on windscreens or respirator eyepieces. The surface may be etched by hydrofluoric acid gas, e.g., gas from a 40 to 50 per cent. concentrated solution of hydrogen fluoride attacking the surface for two to three minutes. An aqueous solution of hydrogen flouride ammonium fluoride and sodium fluoride may be used; or a solution of hydrogen fluoride, with an inhibitor added. The etching may be achieved by sandblasting. If the sheet of glass is immersed in a bath of boric acid or sodium silicate and the solution evaported by a high temperature (500‹C. to 600‹C.), transparent particles fuse to the surface to give the desired irregularities.
