Abstract

535,137. Explosives. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 28, 1939, No. 26809. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1938 [Class 9 (ii)] A process for making a granular detonating explosive especially suitable for coal blasting, comprises mixing ammonium nitrate with a solid detonation sensitizing agent capable of serving also as a binding agent, and a liquid for softening the sensitizing agent, the mixing being effected without destruction of the individual identity of the component materials, the resultant particles being compacted and granulated, all particles being eliminated which pass a 50-mesh sieve. As the binding agent for holding together the particles of ammonium nitrate and other ingredients, to form the distinct granular explosive units, there may be employed a combustible material capable of gelatinization in the presence of a volatile solvent and preferably the binding agent will also act as a good sensitizer for the ammonium nitrate, for example, nitrocellulose, ground smokeless powder, polyvinyl nitrate. Binding agents without sensitizing action such as starch, ethyl cellulose, and polyvinyl acetate may be used in conjunction with a non-binding sensitizing agent. The binding agents are rendered adhesive by a volatile solvent such as acetone, amyl acetate, methyl alcohol and other solvents having sufficiently low boiling points to permit their ready removal. Additional oxydizing agents such as sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, barium nitrate, potassium chromate, manganese dioxide, and additional combustible ingredients such as wood pulp, starch, various meals and salts of organic acids may be included. The ammonium nitrate used is preferably of such size that not less than 40 per cent will pass through a 48-mesh screen, and the total amount of ammonium nitrate is preferably 75-85 per cent of the explosive.
