Abstract

534,167. Two-stroke engines. POUNDER, C. C., and REBBECK, F. E. Jan. 4, 1940, No. 212. [Class 7 (ii)] In a two-stroke singleacting engine in which each cylinder unit comprises a power piston 1 controlling scavenging-air inlet ports 24 and an exhaust or secondary power piston 9 controlling exhaust ports 25 in the engine cylinder 23, the exhaust piston 9 is connected to eccentrics 7 on the crankshaft 5 through eccentric rods 19, 20 and two pairs of side rods 11, 12 and 13, 14, one pair on each side of the cylinder. The side rods are connected to the exhaust piston by a yoke 10 and each pair of the rods is connected to a sliding crosshead 15 or 16 articulated to the eccentric rod 19 or 20. The crossheads 15, 16 are each divided in two or more parts to allow for wear, the parts being adjustably bolted together by the side rods. The piston rod 2 of the power piston is connected by a sliding crosshead 4 to a connecting rod 3 on the main crank of the shaft 5, and works through a stuffing box 30 in a diaphragm 28 separating the open lower end of the cylinder from the crank case. The pistons 1, 9 may be of the same or different diameters.
