Abstract
521,128. Bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BINNEY, E. A. Nov. 9, 1938, No. 32454., [Class 12 (i)] In an electrically propelled or other vehicle in which an axle 4 is driven through gearing located in a box adjacent the axle box 7, the gear box wall 1 is formed with a clearance aperture 2 sealed by an annular cover 5 which is formed with a groove 8 filled with packing bearing against the axle box 7 and with annular channels 10 to receive oil escaping from the exhaust bearing between the wheel hub 3 and a bearing surface 6 on the axle box. The channels 10 may be provided with plugged drain holes. To prevent oil from 'the bearing from entering the gear box the hub 3 is formed with one or more throwing rings 9. In another construction the axle box is formed with an extension forming an annular drip trough around. an extension of the gearwheel hub of reduced diameter, the shoulder between the. hub and the extension acting as an oil thrower. The annular cover between the box extension and the gear box wall is formed with an oil catching lip having an outwardly turned edge.
