Abstract

529,826. Manhole covers. DUDLEY & DOWELL, Ltd., and DOWELL, P. W. June 9, 1939, No. 16891. [Class 107] A movable cover and frame are each provided with a peripheral channel, one of said channels containing grease and the other a packing material, such as rubber or asbestos, which is engaged in a gas-tight manner by the free edge of one wall of the first-mentioned channel. The underside of the cover is formed with two spaced peripheral flanges 9, 10 and the frame 6 is formed with a flange 11 extending first downwardly, then inwardly beneath the cover and ending in an upstanding wall 12 which enters between the flanges 9 and 10 of the cover. This arrangement provides two sealing channels, one 13 adapted to be filled with grease and another adapted to receive packing, material 15. The upper edge of the wall 12 may be bevelled at 16 to make a gastight joint with the packing. At one side the cover has projecting hinge lugs 17 which receive the hinge pin 19. A recess 20 in the cover contains a lifting handle 21 and a staple 22 on the underside forms an internal handle. Four locking members are provided, each comprising a double armed lever, one arm forming an internal operating handle 28 and the other a turnbutton adapted to engage beneath inclined lugs 26 on the frame. The spindle 24 of the lever passes through the cover and is formed at its upper end with a squared portion for manipulation by a spanner from outside the manhole or shelter. A conical rubber packing bush is inserted between the cover and a collar 31 integral with the spindle 24. A central portion of the cover is formed with ventilating openings 34 which may be closed from within by a hinged plate 35 with a channel 41 for packing material adapted to co-operate with a depending flange 39 to form a seal.
