Abstract
527,411. Ignition systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and KNIGHT, H. DE B. April 11, 1939, No. 11004. [Class 7 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XL] An arrangement for producing high voltage impulses for obtaining ignition sparks at a gap 18 comprises a grid-controlled valve 4 in the primary circuit of a transformer 6, the valve being normally blocked by negative bias from a battery 14 but rendered periodically conductive by potentials generated by applying pressure to a piezo-electric device 15. Pressure may be applied by an armature influenced by a moving magnet, or fluid pressure controlled by a valve operated synchronously with the engine may be used. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the voltage produced by the transformer is applied to an auxiliary electrode associated with a spark gap in the primary circuit of a further transformer feeding the ignition spark gap.
