Abstract
527,328. Saponifying cellulose ester materials. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. April 6, 1939, No. 10764. Convention date, April 6, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Textile materials such as filaments, yarns, fabrics and the like containing an organic ester of cellulose are saponified in the presence of pine oil defined as an oil obtainable from pine trees which oil comprises as essential constituents terpene alcohols, mainly α- and #- terpineols. The saponifying agent employed may be an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, ammonium hydroxide or an aliphatic amine such as diethanolamine or triethanolamine. The saponification may be effected by the winch method even when the materials treated, for example, crepe fabrics, contain high twist cellulose ester yarn. The saponification may be incomplete but sufficient to impart an affinity for cotton dyes to the cellulose ester materials. Cellulose esters mentioned are cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate and cellulose butyrate and these may be present in admixture with other textile materials, for example, regenerated cellulose, cotton, wool and silk.
