Abstract
512,879. Hardening rails. SMITH, P. RAYNER-. (Eisenwerk-Ges. Maximilianshutte). Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32866. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 7, 1938.] [Class 72] Railway rails containing 0.3-0.4 per cent of carbon and 0.7-1.5 per cent. of silicon are hardened by cooling at a rate intermediate those obtained by quenching in flowing water and by hot-bed cooling, for example, by blowing on air or a mixture of air and water, by spraying with water, by single or repeated immersion in stationary water, or by means of oil or salt baths. The steel may contain other alloying constituents, such as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, or titanium, individually in amounts not exceeding 0.5 per cent. and in all not exceeding 2.0 per cent. Specifications 247,276, [Class 82 (i)], and 485,474 are referred to.
