Abstract
512,196. Toxins and the like. LEDERLE LABORATORIES, Inc. Aug. 12, 1938, No. 23806. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1937. [Class 81 (i)] Pertussis (Whooping cough) toxin or Toxoid is prepared by growing cultures of pertussis bacilli in a medium of soluble-starch broth, vegetable extract broth or semi-solid agar, separating the bacilli from the culture medium by filtration and preserving the filtrate for use as a toxin or detoxifying it to form a toxoid. The bacilli are cultivated for about 48 hours at a temperature of 37‹C. under an atmosphere of about 1 part of carbon dioxide and 4 parts of oxygen by volume. The detoxification is effected when desired bv the addition of a small amount of formalin to the filtered solution, about 0.3 per cent. of 40 per cent. strength, and keeping the mixture at about 40‹C. for two to three weeks.
