Abstract

511,954. Semi-rotary compressors. NATIONAL GAS & OIL ENGINE CO., Ltd., BALMFORD, A. B., and BURN, W. S. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 6007. [Class 110 (ii)] A compressor for supplying scavenging or supercharging air to an internal-combustion engine comprises an oscillating member 9 having radial pistons 6, 7, which co-operate with valve members alternately cutting off suction and delivery ports 10, 11. An abutment 8 has pockets 23 communicating with ports 10, 11 controlled by oscillating plates 12 which alternately open and close suction and delivery ports. The member 9 and valves 12 may be driven from the engine crank-shaft by separate crank mechanisms, Air enters a chamber 19 through a filter 20, and passes by way of passages 21 and parts 11 through the suction ports to the chamber 3, and is delivered through similar ports 11 to a receiver 13 which communicates periodically with the engine cylinder or cylinders. The member 9 and valves 12 may be made of a light alloy with thin discs 24 of a different material separating them. The capacity of the chamber 3 may be increased axially by inserting a longer member 1 between the end walls 3, 4. In place of the valves 12, reed valves of single strip or multiple form may be attached at the inner end of the abutment which is divided centrally to form two compartments connected to suction and discharge passages respectively. In a further arrangement a single piston on the member 9 has reed valves in its surface closed during a compression stroke and opened by inertia effort on a return stroke.
