Abstract

511,650. Reducing surface-friction of aircraft. MESSERSCHMIDTT, W. Aug. 5, 1938, No. 23230. Convention date, Aug: ' 11, 1937. [Class 4] , In aircraft wings provided with slots connected with suction devices for sucking off the boundary layer the walls of the suction conduits are formed by structural elements, such as solid or hollow spars or hollow stringers, preferably in conjunction with parts of the stressed skin. In one form, openings d in the wing skin communicate with a trough-like flange c of a box-spar, and in some cases by forming holes i in the flange with the interior of the spar itself, a suction pump being in the latter case connected to the spar. In another form slots in the skin register with U-section stringers. In a third form, the conduit is formed by portions of the wing covering, the web of the spar and a diagonal web which closes the angle between the spar web and the wing covering.
