Abstract

511,604. Centrifugal gas cleaners. BABCOCK, O., and SMITH, J. R. Jan. 21, 1938, Nos. 2117 and 2118. Convention dates, Jan. 22, 1937, and Dec. 3, 1937. [Class 23] A centrifugal gas cleaner, particularly for use with the carburetters of internal combustion engines and for conditioning air to buildings, has a conical casing 1 surmounted by a perforated cylindrical screen 9 and a cover plate 11 held in place by bolts 10. The flange at the top of the casing 1 which supports the screen also supports a slotted plate 3 arranged to impart a whirling motion to the entering gas, and also the clean gas outlet tube 5. The lower part of this tube passes below the plate 3 to the extent of thirty per cent. of the depth of the casing 1. A dust spout 15 enters a receptacle 16 supported by a cylinder 12 sealed at its upper edge 13 to the casing 1, and the plate 14 is sealed to the cylinder by a rubber gasket 18, and to the spout. To break up the swirl of gases the spout is directed towards one side of the receptacle. An inner conical casing 6 is spaced from the main casing 1 and has a number of elongated slots 7 for the passage of separated dust. The suction in the tube 5 causes air to be drawn in through the screen 9 and whirled. as it enters the separator. Clean gas passes out through the tube 5, and the separated dust passes through the slots 7 and the space between the casings 1, 6 to the spout 15 and receptacle 16. In a modification a filter 19, Fig 5, is arranged in the path of the gas after it leaves the centrifugal separator. Air enters through the screen 20 and passes through the separator 21; the cleansed air passes through the outlet pipe 29 and the dome-shaped filter 19 secured to the screen 20 by clamps 25. In a further modification the separator is inverted and the curved spout is omitted. An annular inlet surrounds the outlet tube at the bottom of the separator; the dust receptacle is arranged over the top of the separator and is held against a rubber gasket by a clamp so that an air tight joint is made.
