Abstract

518,858. Artificial resins. ALBERT PRODUCTS, Ltd. Oct. 25, 1938, No. 30857. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Artificial products hardenable at normal temperature are obtained by mixing at normal or moderate temperatures water-insoluble ureaformaldehyde and/or thioureaformaldehyde condensation products with phenol resols and hardening catalysts ; condensation products of formaldehyde with condensable amino compounds, e.g., dicyandiamide, or aniline, may be added. The two resins may be mixed, neutralized and heated with stirring, or one resin may be added to a solution, e.g., in alcohol, of the other, or solutions of both resins may be mixed and heated. Alkaline or acid catalysts may be added, preferably acid, e.g., hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acids or hydroxylamine-chlorhydrate. The products are suitable for coatings, adhesives, cement, packing and impregnating materials and for castings and plastic masses. In examples, (1) a waterinsoluble product obtained by weakly alkaline condensation of urea and thiourea with formaldehyde at 30-40‹C., followed by further heating with urea nitrate in alcohol, is mixed with a phenol resol, produced by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of caustic' soda, together with glycerine as softening agent and an alcoholic solution of hydrochloric acid to produce a casting resin ; (2) a resol from dioxydiphenylmethane and formaldehyde is added to an alcoholic solution of a ureaformaldehyde condensation product and, after heating to 60-70‹C. for a short time a butanol solution of sulphuric acid, together with ethyl lactate giving a solution suitable as an adhesive, e.g., for completely hardened phenolic or carbamide resins ; (3) a butanol solution of a cresol-formaldehyde resin is mixed with a spirit-benzol alcohol solution of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product triturated with pigments or dyestuffs and alcoholic hydrochloric acid added forming enamels. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to urea-formaldehyde and/or thiourea-formaldehyde condensation products in general, and includes a further example in which dimethylolurea is heated with a phenolformaldehyde resin and treated with phosphoric acid. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
