Abstract

518,356. Stapling. QUICK, C. G., FOWLES, R. W., and TURRALL, G. Sept. 24, 1938, No. 27914. Addition to 492,891. [Class 89 (iii)] The rotary stapling mechanism of the parent Specification is modified by providing the plunger, which in one position forms the base of the female staple forming recess in the stapling cylinder and in its other position serves to eject the staple, with non-positive locating means such as spring catches to hold the plunger in either of its two extreme positions; the plunger is also provided with a movable detent to retain a length of wire on the plunger when the male staple forming part recedes from the staple forming recess. In the machine shown comprising a stapling forming cylinder 1 carrying duplicate staple forming male parts 7, 8 cooperating with staple forming recesses 28, 29 in the stapling cylinder 2 the bases of which recesses are formed by plungers 92, 93 the latter are, as in Specification 517,453, moved from the staple ejection position to the staple forming position by the male parts 7, 8 and one cam 121 only is required to operate the plungers on their ejection stroke; each plunger 92, 93 is provided with a recess 116, Fig. 4, having a spring 117 and ball 118 coacting with recesses 119, 120 in a cover plate 114 to locate the plunger in either extreme position. The staple wire is gripped in a recess 115 in the end of plunger 92 by a beak 124 on a spring-pressed or springy arm 122 urged into gripping position by the engagement of a lug 126 with a shoulder 127 when the plunger moves into staple forming position.
