Abstract

518,236. Lead acetate. TENNANT, W. J. (Birkenstein, L. R.). Aug. 18, 1938, No. 24376. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] Impure lead-containing materials containing lead sulphate, such as spent battery plates are treated with a hot alkaline solution of an alkali metal compound, the liquor is removed from the remaining solid residue and this is then leached with a solution containing acetic acid. The resulting solution of lead acetate is drawn off and filtered and the residue is smelted in the usual way. The acetic acid solution preferably contains a reagent which will reduce or render soluble lead peroxide. Such reagents are alkali nitrites, hydrogen peroxide, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, alkali peroxide and organic acids.
