Abstract

516,574. Torsional vibration-dampers. CARTER, B. C. June 22, 1938, No. 18506. [Class 108 (iii)] (Also in Group XXIV] Means for reducing torsional vibration in crank and other shafts comprise one or more circular balance - weights 5, each adapted to oscillate with rolling contact on a circular track 4 carried by the shaft, gear-teeth on the weight meshing with teeth on the shaft track, in order to prevent slipping. The gearing may be, for example, of double helical form, to prevent axial movement of the weight. The shaft axis 9 may be within the track 4, instead of external to it. The weight may roll on either the inside or the outside of the shaft track, and, in the latter case, the centres of the track and of the weight may be on the same or on opposite sides of the point of contact. Stops 12, 13 may be provided to limit the oscillation. Friction may, if desired, be increased by causing trapping of lubricant to occur.
