[Class 78 (ii)] [Also in Groups XX and XIV] The weight of appliances displaceable both longitudinally and perpendicularly to the tiltable couch of X-ray apparatus is counterbalanced for the respective displacements by means of a counterpoise movable longitudinally of the couch part and a portion of. the counterpoise guided on the main part thereof for movement perpendicularly to the couch. The appliance carriage 3, Fig. 1, is mounted by means of rollers 15 on the couch 1, an arm 7a carrying the screen and slide holder 7 being mounted on the carriage 3 by means of rollers 18. The counterpoise comprises a main part 5 mounted on the couch by means of rollers 16 and a part 6 mounted on an arm 12 on the part 5 by means of rollers 17, The part 5 and carriage 3 are connected by a chain 4 running over rollers 11, 11a and the part 6 and arm 7 are connected by a lever 8 pivoted at 9 on an arm 10 on the carriage 3, the rollers 19. 20 on this lever, moving in a slot 13 in the part 6 and in a slotted guide 14 on the arm 7a respectively. In another form, Figs. 2, 3, the appliance carriage 3 is formed with an outrigger 30, and is mounted on the couch by means of rollers 15 on the carriage itself and rollers 15a on the outrigger, the rollers 15a engaging rails 33: the arm 7a is mounted by means of rollers 18 in a tube 47 on the carriage 3. The outrigger 30 is connected to the counterpoise part 5 by chains 4 passing over pulleys 11, 11a and the arm 7a is connected to the part 6, which is mounted in a bow 28 on the part 5, by means of a chain 23 attached to the arm 7a at 22 and passing over pulleys 24, 25. 26 and secured to the part 5 at 27, the part 6 being in this case supported in a loop of the chain 23. In another modification a screen holder and X-ray tube are separately counterbalanced, the elements being again interconnected by chains or the like. In a modification of the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, the screen is universally adjustable. In a further modification positive relative movement of the arm 7a and part 6 in both directions is secured by means of chains. In a modification of the form shown in Fig. 2, the outrigger 30 is replaced by a bar held between the inner closely adjacent stretchers of the chains 4 and the outer stretchers of such chains are attached to bars carrying the part 5, the chains lying in a single plane parallel to the couch; and in another modification, the outrigger is replaced by two bars connected to the chains 4 which lie inparallel planes, the pulleys 11a being connected by a shaft.
