Abstract

515,107. Two- and four-stroke cycle engines; valves. WILLCOX, F. A. May 24, 1938, No. 15409. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Parallel or aligned cylinders with a common combustion chamber accommodate pistons connected to crank-shafts geared together in a 2 : 1 ratio. The slower-moving piston is of two diameters, the portion of larger diameter forming a pump from which compressed mixture is transferred to the combustion chamber by way of a transfer passage s. The pump space has a swept volume exceeding that of the working cylinders. Electromagnetically actuated valves are placed in the inlet d and the transfer passage s and are controlled by an adjustable rotary switch on the half-speed shaft.
