514,815. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. STRAATVEIT, N. N. June 8, 1938, No. 17073. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] A reciprocating pump or compressor, particularly for use with refrigerators, comprises an operating chamber 27 containing a number of vibratory elements 1-24, such as plates, discs, or diaphragms, arranged to act successively on the fluid, electromagnetic, electrostatic, or mechanical operating means being provided to bring the vibratory elements into phasedisplaced vibratory movement so as to cause a serpentine movement of the fluid from the inlet port 35 to the outlet port 36. In the form shown in Fig. 2, resilient metal plates are clamped between spacing pieces 32, separated by wedge-like webs 37, formed with staggered apertures 34, electrically insulated by covering them with rubber, shellac, or enamel, and connected by conductors 1<1>-24<1> to an electric phase converter. Fig. 3 shows plates made of rubber and containing electric coils 38 supplied with alternating current, the apertures 34 being covered by thin resilient diaphragms 39 serving as non-return valves and formed with relatively staggered holes 40. In Fig. 7 the plates comprise thick non-resilient centre portions carried by corrugated resilient outer portions 43 ; they are separated by springs 44, and are vibrated by a rod 45 connected to a motor.
