Abstract
501,234. Two - way transmission. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. April 5, 1938; No. 10433. Convention date, April 5, 1937. [Class 40 (iv)] In a two-directional system comprising a two-wire line which branches through forks 3 and 4 to the two sides 1 and 2'of a four-wire system, suppressors S1 and S2 are associated with the side channels in such a manner that when signals are passing along one channel, the suppressor associated with the other channel blocks the latter channel only for signals that are no stronger than the echo signals. The output of an amplifier or amplifier-detector V3 connected to line 1 controls the suppressor 82 and a corresponding amplifier V4 connected to line 2. A steady alternating voltage G of a frequency outside the operating range of frequency of the system is applied to the input of the amplifiers V3 and V4 to ensure that the system remains in a stable rest condition when signalling ceases. The suppressors S1 and S2 may be contacts for making or breaking the respective lines, operated by a polarized relay having two windings energized respectively by the output currents of the amplifiers V3 and V4. The relay may have holding windings so that when signalling ceases the system remains in a stable condition of rest. Alternatively, a non-polarized relay can be used. In the modification shown in Fig. 1a the output of. the amplifier V3 is applied through a transformer 9 to a rectifier circuit and produces a voltage across a resistance W. The amplifier V4 similarly produces an opposing voltage across a resistance W1. The resistances W and W1 are arranged in series with a gas-filled discharge device Gli, a resistance R, and a battery B1. When line 1 is used, the voltage produced across the device Gli is greater than the striking voltage of the device and a current passes through R. The voltage across R is utilized to operate the suppressor S2. When line 2 is used, the voltage across the device Gli is reduced to below the extinguishing voltage and the suppressor is not operated.
