Abstract
500,504. Alloys. MAUTSCH, R. Dec. 11, 1937, No. 34373. Convention date, Dec. 24. 1936. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XI] A metallurgical product of rodlike form for use as a charge for melting metals or forming alloys in a melting furnace, consists of a bundle of metallic fibres united by compression, the fibres having substantially the same crosssection throughout their entire length and being distributed in a substantially uniform manner throughout the entire length of the rod. The fibres may be of different metals. Long fine fibres, which may be formed by flaring metal plates, are introduced into a hopper 2 from which they may be drawn and preliminarily compressed by rolls 4. They are then led through rolls 7, 8 which unite the fibres by compression preferably in the cold without any binding agent. Binding agents or chemical or physical means such as heat may be used to facilitate uniting. The rolls 7, 8 may be on axes inclined to each other so as to twist the whole of the fibres during compression. Powdered metals or other substances may be blown between the fibres through nozzle 10 or may be localized on the surface by application thereto just before entering the rolls 7, 8. One or more wires 23, or a ribbon or a rod of metallic fibres previously subjected to preliminary compression may be guided by a hopper 24 through the centre of the fibres. The products may be used as welding-rods. When used as a charge in a metting-furnace the rod may be fed from the compressing apparatus directly into the funnel. Specification 500,455, [Group XI], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the rod may form a charge for a gas heated melting furnace. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
