508,823. Pasteurizing - apparatus; plate heat - exchangers. RUTTIMANN, R. Aug. 26, 1938, No. 25149. [Claes 49] [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for pasteurizing milk, grape juice, and other liquids comprises a double-walled vertical cylindrical vessel 1, 2 formed as two superimposed parts 12, 13 which are insulated from each other, e.g. by a heat-insulating layer 14 disposed on a separating ring 11, and a cylindrical vessel 4 within the double.walled vessel, an even narrow passage 5 being formed between the two vessels into which the liquid enters at the bottom and ascending is heated to effect pasteurization through a heating element 15 disposed in the lower part 12 of the double-walled vessel. As shown, the liquid is supplied from a tank 7 through a pipe 8 to passage 5 which is at least 2 mm. in width and in which it is heated by supplying steam through a perforated pipe 15 to the part 12, which has insulation 17 the condensate being discharged through an outlet 18 controlled by a spring valve. Electrical heaters, hot air pipes or other heating means may replace the steam heating. The pasteurized liquid ascends through a passage 5a in which it may be cooled by circulating cold water through part 13. The vessel 4 may be in two parts the upper of which has a larger diameter so that passage 5a is of smaller width to give quicker cooling.
