Abstract
507,638. Street &c. lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and VILLIERS, W. A. Dec. 17, 1937, No. 34999. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] In a street or similar directional lighting fitting having on each side of the source S a refractor R, R<1> formed with prisms P, P<1>, which so direct the light that it has a maximum intensity in a preferred plane highly inclined, e.g. 70‹ to the vertical, there is provided, on the side of each refractor remote from the source, a mirror M, M<1> which serves to intercept stray light issuing from the refractor on its own side of the source above the preferred plane and also to direct, as shown by lines 3, 4 and 6, 7 and 9, 10, the regularly refracted rays 2, 3 and 5, 6, and 8, 9 preferentially into the preferred plane on the other side of the source. The mirrors M, M<1> are so arranged that their lower edges cut off all direct light issuing at an angle greater than 75‹ to the vertical, and they may be either plane or curved in horizontal section, vertical or inclined to the vertical, or inclined to each other in a horizontal plane as shown in Fig. 2. The refractors R, R<1> may be replaced by wing reflectors disposed above the source.
