Abstract
507,473. Electric resonators; aerials. BORMANN, 0. Sept. 14, 1937, No. 25012 Convention date, Sept. 15, 1936. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A transmission line 2, Fig. 10, of the coaxialconductor type is coupled to a conducting tube 3, which comprises a hollow resonator of the dielectric-guide type, by means of slots 1 cut perpendicular to the current-paths in the conductive walls of the transmission line 2 and conducting tube 3. The waves may be standing or travelling waves. The tube 3 may be evacuated or may contain air or other gas, or a liquid or solid dielectric. Its ends may be open or-closed. The slots 1 may be open or sealed with insulating material, and may be of adjustable width. One mode of oscillation for standing waves is shown in Fig. 3, where the lines of electric field E are closed circles with centres on the axis ZZ, while the lines of magnetic field are curves H embracing them. Various other modes of oscillation are described, Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown). In the mode shown in Fig. 3, oscillatory currents flow in the curved surface S of the cylinder 3, parallel to the circles shown in section at E, and the coupling slot 1, Fig. 10, is cut so as to be transverse to the lines of current flow. Fig. 8 shows one mode of oscillation in a resonator 2 of the coaxial transmission-line type, in which the lines of electric field and current-flow are denoted by arrows E, and there are a current mode at the middle XX of the resonator and current antinodes at its ends. ' The slot 1, Fig. 10, is accordingly transverse to the current path in the transmission line 2 as well as to that in the conducting tube 3, and serves for coupling one to the other by flow of current over the edges of the slot. The waves may be stationary or travelling waves, or a mixture of both types. They may travel down a coupling tube 4, Fig. 11, which is fed through a coaxial line (not shown), and be emitted into space by a set of parallel radiators 8 coupled to the tube 4 through slots 1, which may be of progressively increasing size, so that they may radiate equal outputs of energy. The invention may be used, Fig. 12 (not shown), for coupling radiators such as 8 to a feeder formed as a pair of coaxial cylinders, and again for coupling the feeder to a dielectric guide which in turn is coupled to a valve formed as a pair of coaxial cylinders. Specifications 429,863, 449,920, 452,490, 452,761, 493,695, and 494,835 are referred to.
