Abstract

506,426. Treating sewage, and foul waters. HAWLEY, C. G. Oct. 26, 1937, No. 29199. [Class 111] [Also in Group III] Apparatus for aerating sewage or other polluted liquid comprises a number of units 2, Figs. 1 and 2, the walls of which have slots and blades 5, which together form tangential nozzles, the upper ends 4 of the walls being imperforate and extending into a chamber 7. When suction is applied to the chamber 7, air drawn into the elements with a whirling motion and the liquid under treatment, which surrounds the lower ends of the elements, is lifted within the elements in a finely divided state. The liquid, with air in suspension, is collected centrifugally on the walls 4 and passes over on to the bottom of the chamber 7, from which it is discharged through tubes 10 and a liquid seal 11. As shown in Fig. 1 the elements are closed at the base and the liquid enters at the lower ends of the walls. In a modified form of apparatus the elements are surrounded by a casing to which air is supplied under pressure, and the base of each element has a central aperture for the entry of the liquid. Ultraviolet lamps may be arranged axially within the elements. Aerating apparatus as described may be arranged at both the inlet and outlet of a settling-tank in plant as described in Specification 498,814, the air drawn from the cham. bers 7 being passed to the incinerator in which the solid matters are destroyed. In such plant the aerating apparatus is used to treat liquid which has been passed through a rotary strainer as described in Specification 499,021 and the float which governs the speed of the strainer may control also a motor driving a fan which draws air through the aerating apparatus.
