Abstract

505,562. Lasting-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., RICKS, F., and PRATT, J. W. Nov. 9, 1937, No. 30699. [Class 17 (i)] A machine of the kind described in Specification 461,326 is provided with means movable relatively to the wipers, engaging the upper nearer its edge than the wipers and adapted, by co-operation with a device engaging the inside of the upper, to grip the upper at opposite sides of the toe portion and control it during inward wiping thereof. The coverplate 5 of the wiper box is provided with a slide-way on each side for a bar 11 to the inner end of which is pivoted an arm 15 carrying a pivot 17 for a clamping member 19 of about one inch in height and width. Each slide has spaced bores 27, the inner one being used for men's shoes, to receive a pin on a block sliding in a slot at the end of a lever 29, the two levers being linked to an equalizing lever 37 actuated by a lever 43 for advancing the clamping members to the edge of the wipers or retracting them therefrom. The lever 43 is actuated by the treadle described in the prior Specification, through a lost motion device provided by an intermediate lever 49 having adjustable stops 55 co-operating with an extension 53 of the lever 43. The lever 43 has a toothed segment 109 co-operating with a pawl 107 for holding the clamps in advanced position. On the pivot of the pawl is a member 105 restrained by a link 119 passing through a friction clamp 117 carried by the lever 49, a pivoted stop 131 preventing this from anticlockwise movement when desired. The hand tool co-operating with the clamps has a loop 145 of unyielding wire. In operation, this loop is pressed forwardly into the upper where this projects upwardly around the toe, and the treadle is depressed to commence the upwipe, as described in the prior Specification. Depression of the treadle causes the lever 43 to swing anticlockwise, the clamps 19 advancing to operative position slightly forward of the toe cap line to grip the upper against the loop 145. A friction grip between the treadle and the lever 43 then slips. Meanwhile, the link 119 has swung the pawl 107 into contact with the segment 109, the pawl preventing yield of the clamping members unless the pressure on the treadle is relieved. The upper is clamped while over-wiping, as described in the prior Specification, is performed, the upper being drawn from between the clamping members as shown in Fig. 8. A bracing wire is then positioned, and the work is released, the pawl 107 being retracted as the lever 43 commences to move clockwise in consequence of the relieving of pressure on the treadle. The Provisional Specification refers, also, to Specification 477,429.
