Abstract
504,557. Optical polarizers. LAND, E. H. Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28804. Drawings to Specification. [Class 97 (i)] Polarizing-apparatus, particularly intended for use as an anti-glare device on vehicles or in stereoscopic projection and viewing apparatus, comprises a plane polarizing element in the form of a transparent sheet in which is embedded optically oriented particles, combined with a bi-refringent sheet producing a predetermined retardation between the components which it transmits. This retardation is preferably a quarter wave-length so that the bi-refringent sheet can be used to convert the plane-polarized beam produced by the polarizing sheet into a circularly-polarized beam. The two sheets may be joined together, for example by cement. For use as an antiglare device, the lamps of vehicles are provided 'with screens consisting of the compound sheets above described, so that they emit circularly-polarized beams and the driver is provided with a visor, for example on the windscreen, consisting of a similar compound sheet with the elements so arranged that the sheet is opaque to the light emitted by the lamps. For stereoscopic projection, each of the projectors for the two component pictures is provided with a circular polarizer as above, one beam being polarized clockwise and the other anticlockwise, and the observer is provided with a viewing device, also consisting of a pair of circular polarizers, each of which transmits the beam appropriate to the eye in front of which it is placed.
