Abstract
499,946. Ironing-machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 9, 1938, No. 23477. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1937. [Class 138 (ii)] In an ironing-machine wherein the ironing is effected by the rotation of a roller 27 in contact with a concave shoe 79 the roller may be held stationary in contact with the shoe whereby the machine may function as a press. The roller is provided with an internal sleeve 34 freely surrounding an eccentric 36 journalled on a stationary tube 19 coaxial with the roller and secured at one end in the gear-housing (not shown). The eccentric is secured to a shaft 18 extending through the tube 19 and having a constantly rotating worm wheel 17 and integral pinion 21 loosely mounted thereon. When the worm wheel is clutched to the shaft, by the actuation of a lever 69 by the knee of the operator, the shaft is rotated to raise the roller into operative engagement with the shoe and the clutch is thrown out automatically after the shaft has rotated through 180‹. An internally-toothed wheel 39 within the roller has now engaged the pinion 40 driven by the constantly moving pinion 21 so that the roller rotates in contact with the shoe until the shaft 18 is again clutched to the worm wheel, when the roller is moved out of contact with the shoe and the drive is broken. The roller may be held stationary in contact with the shoe by the manual actuation of a lever 52 which rotates a shaft 50 and through a stop arm 49, raises the shaft 41 thereby disconnecting the pinion 40 from the internal gear wheel 39. The shaft 41 is connected through a flexible coupling 44 to the shaft 25 carrying the pinion 24 driven by the pinion 21. Rotation of the roller during its movement into contact with the shoe is prevented by providing an intermediate sleeve 35 between the eccentric 36 and sleeve 34 with a tongue 77 which engages a radial slot 78 in a disc 43 secured to the tube 19. The end of the shaft 41 adjacent the pinion 40 travels in a slot 42 in the disc 43.
