[Class 20 (iii)] Rooms of buildings and other enclosures are sealed to prevent the entry of draughts or poisonous gases by fitting the door, window and other openings with tubing, adapted to be inflated to seal the gap between the edges of the opening and the closure member therefor, and to be normally protected by a plate which automatically moves to a position in which it covers the channel containing the tubing when the closure member is removed. In the construction shown, the tubing 3 is mounted in channels 4 of the fixed frame members of a window. Valve controlled inflation tubes 11 are fitted to the transom 7 and sill 6 and the tubing when inflated is adapted to expand into grooves 21 formed in the casement 1 and fanlight 2. The tubing is held in the channels 4 by strips of fabric 13 cemented to the tubing and the channels. The window openings above and below the transom are fitted with frames 16 having peripheral recesses 15 which house the sealing plates 14 for the channels. These plates, when the hinged sash frames are in the open position, are urged by springs 17 to a position in which they cover the channels, and are depressed against the action of the frames by the hinged frames when the latter are closed. That corner of the hinged frame which first strikes the plate may be reinforced by means of a metal plate. The plates 14 may be mounted on ball-bearings and may be fitted with further springs adapted to impart a snap-action to its movements. In a modification, the sealing means is applied to a metal window frame the channels of which are formed during the casting or manufacture of the steel or other metal frame members. In the case of casement windows, the vertical free edge of one hinged frame is fitted with an inflatable tube which is protected by a spring-controlled hinged plate adapted to be opened by hand prior to the closing of the windows.
