Abstract
Drying-oils for use in the preparation of dispersions employed in an electrophoretic coating process are treated as described in the following examples; (1) a mixture of 200 lb. castor oil and 200 lb. oiticica oil is brought to 120 DEG C. in one hour and air is blown through at this temperature for two hours, the temperature then being raised to 270 DEG C., and air blown through for 2-3 hours; (2) 400 lb. oiticica oil is heated at 100-150 DEG C. with 8 lb. p-cresol or dimethyl-p-cresol for one hour and the temperature raised rapidly to 280 DEG C., and then checked with ice or ice-cold water; (3) 1 part of tung oil and 3 parts of linseed oil are heated to 200 DEG C. and blown with air in the presence of 2 per cent aluminium chloride or 2 per cent silicon chloride for three hours. The temperature is then raised to 280 DEG C. and held for 2 hours. The oil is then cooled to 120 DEG C. and filtered or clarified; (4) 400 lb. of tung oil are treated in 20-30 minutes to 285 DEG C. The source of heat is then removed and the temperature allowed to rise to 290 DEG C. when it is checked by addition of 40 lb. of cold linseed stand oil; it is then cooled below 250 DEG C. The first Provisional Specification also describes the preparation of a stand oil as follows. 400 lb. tung oil are heated at 180 DEG C. with 20 lb. pentaerythritol and 4 lb. tin oxide for 10 hours; the product is heated for 3 hours at 200 DEG C. with 165 lb. linseed oil fatty acids and blown for 1-3 hours at 250 DEG C.
