Abstract
494,303. Hydraulic power transmitters. LAVAUD, D. S. DE. April 21, 1937, No. 11458. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] In a torque-converter of the F÷ttinger type, each of the turbine blades 43 has a pin 50 engaging a radial slot 51 in the turbine shell 8 ; each blade is also pivotally connected at 44 to rings 45, 46 movable relative to said shell and urged in one direction by springs 47. Curved slots 52a in the ring 45 accommodate the pins 50. At starting, the liquid thrust on the turbine blades is sufficient to turn the blades, against the restraint of the springs, into the position 43a; as the speed of the turbine increases, the liquid circulation, and therefore thrust on the blades decreases, and the blades tend to turn into the position 43b, this being aided by centrifugal force on the blades themselves. A friction clutch is provided for affording a " direct drive " ; clutching is effected by means of a centrifugal mass 69 rotating with the turbine, this mass being operative only when released by a member 71, release being effected by turning of the turbine blades to a suitable angle.
