494,034. Deep-boring. SULLIVAN MACHINERY CO. May 28, 1937, No. 14834. Convention date, July 9, 1936. [Class 85] A drill rod chuck mechanism comprises a support movably guided on a frame and carrying a rotatable member provided with a chuck adapted to engage the drill rods to transmit the drive thereto from said member, chuck operating means on the support, power transmitting means to actuate the chuck operating means irrespective of the position of the support on the frame, and a controlling device mounted on the frame for controlling the power transmitting means. A frame 3 has guides 11 for shoes 12 on a transverse frame 14 connected to the piston rods 9 of hydraulic rams 7 by which the frame 14 is movable vertically. Supported in the frame 14 is a drive sleeve 17 rotated through chain 32, slidable shaft 24 and spur gearing 20 ; chuck jaws 48 are slidable in radial slots in the sleeve 17 and are connected through links 52 to blocks 51 with bolts 53 extending through adjustable bushings 54 threaded into a chuck casing 44, vertical movement of the casing 44 causing the jaws 48 to grip or release the drill rods 19. The chuck casing 44 is supported by ball-bearings 42 on a frame 40 supported by pistons 37 moving in vertical cylinders 36 fixed to the frame 14; pipes connect the upper ends of the cylinders 36 with an annular chamber 62 in the frame 14 and surrounding one piston rod 9, the lower ends of the cylinders 36 being similarly connected to a similar chamber 62 surrounding the other piston rod 9. Fluid is supplied to one chamber 62 and exhausted from the other chamber 62 under control of a four-way valve 74 controlling pipes 75, 76, connected to pipes 57 which pass with clearance into the piston rods 9. In another form, Fig. 8, wear of the chuck jaws is taken up by a rotatable cam ring 86 acting through blocks 80 pressed outwards by coil springs 89 and connected through the links 52 to the chuck jaws ; after adjustment, the cam ring is locked .by tightening bolts 83.
