Abstract
488,059. Retractable undercarriages for aircraft. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CHAPLIN, R.. H. July 13, 1937, No. 19414. [Class 4] The wheel carrying element of an aircraft undercarriage is pivoted about a single axis which is inclined, as seen in plan, to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and also, as seen in side elevation, to the plane in which the wheel lies when retracted so that the wheel swings laterally, rearwardly (or forwardly) and upwardly for retraction. A wheel 1, Fig. 1, is carried by a leg 2 attached to wing spar 3 by a pin joint 4 of which the axis is inclined to the plane of the wheel and also to the plane of the wing. Means for effecting retraction and extension comprise a lever 7 rigid with the leg, Fig. 5, to which is connected a link 8 which is pivotally attached to a bell crank 9 pivoted to the structure at 10. A hydraulic jack 11 is pivoted to the structure at 12 and to the bell crank at 13. Instead of the wheel housing being in the wing as shown it may be in the fuselage, nacelle, wing-stub or fillet.
