Abstract

Solid or semi-solid organic matter is degraded by a bacterial process in which the fermentation is effected in two stages, or the first stage by the action of anaerobic bacteria in a chamber closed against the free ingress of air and in the second stage by the action of aerobic thermophile bacteria in a chamber into which air is introduced. The product is a manure. The organic matter may be impregnated with the anaerobic and thermophile aerobic bacteria either singly, or together, say by spraying it with a suitably infected liquid medium. Excess acidity may be prevented by the addition of gas lime, basic slag, calcium carbonate &c. and any ammonia which is formed may be absorbed by the addition of calcium sulphate. The first (anaerobic) stage may be effected at temperatures of 50-80 DEG C. by means of the bacteria in sewage sludge or by means of a culture of Spirochaeta Cytophaga. The temperature may be maintained by the introduction of warm aqueous vapour. An oxygen-consuming fungus of the classes mycelium, periculium, or aspergillus, e.g. aspergillus glaucus Ascosporic may be introduced during this stage to remove any oxygen present. The second (aerobic) stage may be carried out at temperatures of up to 85 DEG C. by means of bacteria obtained from a humic soil, or B. ammoniagenes, B. Trauffautii, B. Ureal, B. Radiciola and Azotobacter Chroococcum. The air employed in the aerobic stage is preferably ozonized and is preferably passed into the chamber intermittently. The air preferably has a temperature of 1 or 2 DEG C. below that of the fermenting matter, the temperature of the ozonized air being progressively raised as that of the mass increases. The air may be heated by compression the compressed air being supplied to the process at a pressure of 1-5 atmospheres. The air supplied may be moist at first but dehydration is effected by supplying dry air towards the end of the process. Preferably, the two stages are carried out in succession in the same chamber, the temperature from the second stage being reached as a result of the heat developed in the first stage. When the process is used to treat large quantities of town or house refuse, it may be carried out in a number of chambers which are successively charged with the incoming refuse, matter in each chamber being infected by introducing a portion of matter from a preceding chamber which has been at 75 DEG C. for not less than 24 hours. In treating town refuse, ciders and coal may be separated therefrom by screening the cinders &c. being then burnt to supply heat and power for the process. The ash may be added to the end product of the process. Any unconverted materials such as bones, hoofs, horns, woollen articles, shoes or leather may be disintegrated and either mixed with the end product or returned to the process.
