Abstract

Neutral or "slightly basic" calcium hypochlorites are obtained by the chlorination of an aqueous suspension of lime, strongly basic hypochlorite or bleaching powder, the formation of hypochlorite crystals being initiated in the presence of previously formed neutral or "slightly basic" solid calcium hypochlorite. "Slightly basic" calcium hypochlorites are defined as products having a basicity weaker than corresponds to 1 mol. calcium hydroxide per mol. calcium hypochlorite. The addition of the "seeding" hypochlorite should not be made so early in the chlorination that the crystals are completely or partially dissolved before the reaction product commences to crystallize. The addition may be repeated once or several times during chlorination, if desired while the chlorine is being introduced. From 5-300 per cent or more neutral or "slightly basic" hypochlorite reckoned on the weight of hypochlorite to be formed may be present. For the production of a practically neutral product, the temperature should not exceed 35 DEG C., 20-25 DEG C. being suitable. For the production of "slightly basic" hypochlorite, a temperature of above 40 DEG C. may be employed. The process may be carried out cyclically by withdrawing part of the suspension after chlorination and adding it to a suspension of basic hypochlorite, preferably dibasic, and again chlorinating. Alternatively, the solid part of the withdrawn suspension may be separated by centrifuging or filtration, and the filtrate treated with lime to form basic hypochlorite, to which is added a supplementary quantity of basic hypochlorite, if desired, and the remaining part of the chlorinated suspension. The mixture is chlorinated after dilution with water if necessary. Only a small part of the chlorinated suspension may be withdrawn at a time. The crystals obtained can be easily filtered, dried and washed. Drying may be effected in a current of air at 60-105 DEG C.
