Abstract

486,917. Universal joints. GOLDSCHMIDT, M. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33286. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] A coupling member comprises a pair of opposed metal plates 5, 6 between which is secured, by vulcanization or the like, a rubber ring 10. The amount of relative turning of the plates is limited by claws 7, 8, Fig. 1, which are formed on the outer or inner peripheries of the plates 5, 6 and which engage with each other through the intermediary of the rubber which fills the spaces therebetween so as to prevent direct contact between the claws ; alternatively, studs 28, Fig. 6, which are fixed to each plate and which serve for securing the plates to the parts to be coupled, may extend with play through apertures in the ring 10 and the other plate, the apertures in the plates being lined by projecting parts of the rubber ring 10. The thickness of the ring 10 may increase from the inner to the outer periphery, so as to equalise the torsional stresses, as shown in Fig. 1. In the latter, the device connects the driven disc 1 of a friction clutch to its hub 4, the plate 5 being spaced from the disc 1 by insulating washers 11 of vulcanite or the like so as to afford spaces for the passage of air to dissipate heat produced by molecular friction. In the case of a shaft coupling, the shafts may be centred by a spherical spigot on the end of one shaft engaging in a socket in the end of the other shaft. At points where compressive or tensile stresses tend to arise, the rubber may be recessed.
