Abstract

Starch granules for use with paper pulp are swollen, but substantially non-disintegrated until, when viewed through crossed Nicols the crosses have disappeared in the bulk of the granules. The starch may be heated, e.g. to 185 DEG F., with disintegration-inhibitors, e.g. sodium soaps of fats or vegetable oils, sulphonated tallows, sulphonated vegetable oils, or sulphonated alcohols, and may then be dried and ground. Specification 488,672 is referred to.
