Abstract
471,301. Two-part couplings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 4, 1937, No. 207. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] An incandescent lamp or the like having the cap 24 formed as a part of the wall of the bulb or envelope 20, is located accurately by seating a shoulder 29 of the cap in a corresponding recess 30 in the holder 32, and retaining the lamp in the holder by resilient fastening means. If the lamp contacts 25 are circular, the fastening means may consist of resilient plates 45, Fig. 2, having keyhole shaped slots for engaging a neck on the contacts 25 by an inserting and turning movement, the turning movement serving also to bring the contacts 25 into resilient jaws 47 forming the holder contacts. The plates 45 are bent to form detents for the pins and to ensure quick-action engagement and disengagement of the contacts. If the contacts are of flat section their ends may be bent to engage beneath resilient bent blades in the holder that form both the contacts and retaining means. If the flat lamp &c. contacts are straight they may be retained in socketlike contacts 71<1>, 72, Fig. 16, in the holder (shown as an adapter) by spring-pressed balls 73 that engage holes in the lamp &c. contacts. The edge 30b of the holder forms the abutment for the lamp &c. cap which is rabbeted. Such a rabbeted cap may be used with an internally shouldered holder. The lamp contacts 25 are sealed into the base of the bulb by providing a skirt 33, Fig. 3, on each contact, the edge of which is fused into the bosses 35 surrounding the lead-in apertures 28. The skirts are thin enough to give resiliently under heat expansion and have tapered edges, and are made of an alloy having a coefficient of expansion near that of the glass such as the alloy known as Fernico, described in Specification 357,665, [Group II]. The skirts may be integral with the contacts or may be brazed thereto by means of a copper ring. Specification 435,663, [Group XI], also is referred to.
