Abstract
471,138. Wrapping-machines. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. Aug. 17, 1936, No. 22646. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1935. [Class 94 (i)] In a wrapping-machine of the kind having a folding box, an elevator for raising an article and wrapper into the folding box, in which it is retained by spring means when the elevator falls, the spring means moves the article towards a shoulder engageable below the article when the article has been fully elevated into the folding box. As shown, the articles a are fed by a belt 23, Fig. 1, over a plate 22, and the endmost is raised by an elevator 29 into a folding bar, carrying a wrapper w with it. A depending skirt 30 on the elevator stops the article feed during this action. The raised article is received between a spring pressed plate 40, and a fixed plate 41, Figs. 1 and 6, which fold the wrapper down the two sides. The plate 40 is formed as shown in Fig. 4, with a T-shaped upper extension 40<1> and is urged towards the article by three springs 43, 44. When the article is fully raised, the extension 40<1> presses the article to the right against a resiliently mounted pivoted piece 46, having a notch 48 which engages the bottom right-hand corner of the article. The force of the spring 44 is sufficient to move the article a short distance on to the floor 50 of the delivery channel. The elevator now falls, leaving the article supported in its uppermost position. The article is carried to the right, Fig. 1, by a pusher 55, which moves with a bottom folder 74 and a top plate 70. The bottom folder 74 passes on each side of the extension 40<1> as shown in Fig. 4, and moves at a faster rate than the pusher 55 and the plate 70 at the beginning of the operation. Inclined folders 90, 91, 92 complete the end folds in a conventional manner. The parts of the machine are adjustable to accommodate different sizes of article. The folding channel may be removed bodily and replaced by others of different sizes, being provided with lugs 85 and dowels 87 for this purpose. Adhesive is applied to the underside of the lower end flaps of the package by spaced rolls 95 rotating in troughs 96. The rolls and the troughs are adjustable both laterally and longitudinally. The lateral adjustment is obtained by securing each trough to a cross-bar 99 by a set screw 98. The longitudinal adjustment is for the purpose of ensuring that, during each period of rest in the intermittent feed of the articles, the rolls 95 lie between the flaps, to avoid too long a contact. This adjustment is obtained by means of a bolt 101 passing through one of a series of holes 103 in the rail 21. A slot 102 permits a fine adjustment. The web feeding and severing mechanism is as described in Specification 471,139, [Group XVI], and the sheet feeding mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 394,192, [Group XVI].
