Abstract

479,977. Drying - apparatus. BUELL COMBUSTION CO., Ltd. (Buttner-Werke Akt.- Ges.) Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1510. [Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying materials which in the moist state tend to form lumps or which undergo marked decrease in volume upon being dried, comprises a preliminary drier and a further drier in both of which the material is progressively advanced on moving supporting surfaces, the material being first spread out in thin layers on the preliminary drier where it is subjected to hot gas flowing over the 'surface of the material and being afterwards transferred to the further drier to form one or more layers of greater thickness through which hot gas is caused to flow. In the construction shown, a casing 1 is provided with air inlets 4, 5, an outlet 3, and two blowers 6, 7 mounted on a shaft 8 and adapted to be driven by an electric motor 9. In the upper part of the casing are annular trays 10 connected together, the lowermost tray being supported on a frame 11 adapted to be rotated through toothed gearing from a shaft 14. Each tray is provided with radial slots dividing the tray into a number of shelves. The material, delivered to the uppermost tray from a shoot 18, is fed successively to the lower trays by fixed scrapers 19, and is discharged by a scraper 22 to a final drier comprising a single tray made up of separate shelves 23. This tray rotates at one-quarter the speed of the trays 10. Each of the shelves 23 is perforated and is mounted so that it can tilt to discharge the contents. The tilting is effected, as the drier rotates, by means of a fixed cam surface 32 engaging a roller 31 which is carried by an arm 30 fitted to the shelf. The air for drying the material is heated by passage over heating elements 35 and flows through the shelves in the final drier and across the surface of the material on the trays 10. The preliminary drier may be in the form of a helically-arranged belt as described in Specification 478,843.
