Abstract

479,173. Tempering glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. June 30, 1936, No. 10191/37. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1935. Divided out of 477,414. [Class 56] A tempered glass article adapted to withstand long continued use at a high temperature, such as a cooking dish or a glass plate forming the support of an electric heating-element, is made from a glass having an annealing temperature not lower than 540‹ C. and a difference between the annealing and softening temperatures of not more than 260‹ C. For withstanding severe heat conditions, the glass should contain at least 10 per cent, and preferably at least 15 per cent, of alumina together with not more than 2 per cent of alkali and at least 10 per cent of alkaline earth oxide, and its coefficient of expansion should be less than 65 x 10<-7>. Compositions of a number of suitable glasses are given in the Specification. The heated article is preferably chilled in a bath of molten inorganic salt which is maintained at a temperature adapted to produce the desired degree of tempering. Alternatively, the article may be tempered to a high degree and then heated to reduce the stress in it to a predetermined amount.
