Abstract
In the manufacture of pneumatic tyres having the tread formed with fine cuts which impart to the tyre anti-skidding properties, the cuts are formed in the tread prior to vulcanization and a medium which will prevent the walls of the cuts from sticking together during the vulcanization is introduced into the cuts either during the formation thereof or subsequently thereto. The cuts may be formed in the tread after the tyre is shaped or prior to shaping, e.g. when the tyre is manufactured by a process in which a rubber band to form the tread is first produced and is afterwards applied to a carcase to form the complete tyre the cuts may be formed in the rubber band during the extrusion thereof, and when the band consists of two separately formed layers doubled together the cuts may be formed in the outer layer only and throughout the thickness thereof prior to uniting with the other layer. The medium which prevents the walls of the cuts from sticking together may be liquid, pasty or dusty materials similar to those which are used to prevent the adhesion of the rubber to the moulds during vulcanization, e.g. water or alcohol having dispersed, emulsified or dissolved therein talc, mica, china clay, phenol, soap, glycerine, gelatine, glue, sugar, gum arabic, dextrine, sodium silicate, or sodium hyposulphite. The cuts may extend in any direction in the tread, e.g. they may lie in planes parallel with or perpendicular to or inclined to the geometrical axis of the tyre or in irregular directions; they may be straight, zigzag or curved; they may extend only a portion of the width of the tread; and the depth and relative distance of the cuts may vary.
