Abstract

478,071. Ammunition boxes. WILLIAMS, A. H. July 21, 1936, No. 20161. [Class 9 (i)] A metal ammunition storage and transport case adapted to contain a plurality of rounds of ammunition comprises an outer shell provided with end caps which themselves form the sole closure members of the ends thereof, one at least of said end caps being held in position by means of one or more longitudinally arranged bolts in such a manner that, when the bolt or bolts is or are screwed up, the said end cap or caps is or are firmly held in position against the end or ends of the outer shell whilst, when the bolt or bolts is or are unscrewed, the one end cap at least may be easily removed to give a ready access to the rounds of ammunition the case having suspended therein a plurality of tubular housings, each adapted to receive a round of ammunition, the forward ends of these housings being shaped to correspond to the tapering noses of the shells and being provided with inset steel or like solid rings to prevent the shells binding with the housings and to take all thrust and shock on the rounds. The Figure shows a substantially rectangular case 11 adapted to contain a number of rounds of ammunition 10 in two superposed layers, the sides and top and bottom of the case being provided with spaced indentations or ribs, some of which are shown at 12. The open ends of this case are stepped in slightly at 14 and are closed by caps 15 provided with turned back edges 16 adapted to fit over the ends 14. Pivoted handles 18 are adapted to lie in recesses 17 in the centre of the caps. As shown, the right-hand cap is permanently fixed in position whilst the left-hand cap is held in position by a pair of spaced longitudinally arranged bolts 19a, the heads of which abut against a transverse web 20 in the case whilst the screwed ends thereof are engaged by wing nuts 21 rotatably mounted in the left-hand cap. The caps are also provided with pressed out parts 22 which lie opposite the primer in the end of the cartridge of the rounds 10 and the fuzes 23 at the noses of the shells respectively. Each round 10 is housed within a sheet-metal tube 30 preferably ribbed as at 31 at one or more points so as to prevent the tubes contacting with the rounds over too great a surface. These tubes are suspended in the case by means of the apertured transverse webs 20, 40 and the forward ends of the tubes are shaped as shown to correspond to the tapering noses of the shells and are provided with inset solid steel rings 60 housed in peripheral recesses 61 in the tubes. If desired, a steel wire ring may be provided around the tubes just in advance of the recesses 61. According to a modification, the bolts 19a may extend between the two end caps themselves.
