Abstract

478,017. Door-operating appliances. GIBBONS & CO. (WILLENHALL), Ltd., GIBBONS, F., and GIBBONS, G. Oct. 17, 1936, No. 28249. [Class 65 (i)] In a door-closing device of the kind in which a spring 7 in a cylinder 2 is compressed, when the door is opened, by a flexible member or chain 6 passing axially through the spring and has one end abutting against the spring and the other attached to the door-post, the cylinder 2 is formed of sheet metal and attached (by tabs 3) to a fixing plate 4 formed with a hole, the edge of the hole being flanged inwardly at 5 to form a rounded surface over which the chain 6 slides and also to form an abutment for the spring 7. In the form shown, the chain is attached to the door-post by a loop member 10 which is inserted into the post through a perforated facing plate 12 and is fixed by a removable pin 14. In order to prevent the member 10 from being drawn into the cylinder 2 when the pin 14 is extracted, a plate with an open-ended slot may be slid over the last link of the chain adjacent to the member 10 to cover the hole in the plate 4. In a modification, avoiding the use of this retaining plate, the member 10 is formed by a screw-threaded pin having an eye at one end to receive the pin 14 and a flattened part at the other end for pivotal connection to the chain 6, the threaded part of the pin carrying a' nut which will not pass through the hole in the plate 4.
