478,008. Handles for cricket bats &c. BROOKS, E. J. H. July 27, 1936, Nos. 20788/36 and 33967/37. Convention dates, Nov. 13, 1935 and Dec. 20, 1935. [Class 132 (ii)] A handle for a cricket bat, hockey stick, tennis racket or like sporting implement comprises two or more separate hollow steel shafts or the like embedded and fixed in the blade of the bat to extend therefrom and a gripping surface formed on the shafts, the shafts being formed or disposed so that the handle will be of maximum stiffness in a plane substantially parallel to the face of the blade and of minimum stiffness in a plane at right-angles thereto and will have large resistance to torque. As shown in connection with a cricket bat, the blade is provided with two holes 9 into which fit the lower ends of steel or like tubes 7 enclosed in parallel or tapered sleeves 8 of fibre or mouldable material. Fibre sole plates 11 are placed below the shafts which may be further secured by rivets 10. A core 16 of cork bound with rubberized fabric cord 15 is inserted between the shafts, and a rubber or cork composition 12 is applied to form the gripping surface. A link 14 is brazed to the upper ends of the shafts. The shafts may taper in either direction or may be of uniform section, and may be provided with internal or external strengthening ribs, or may be of H-section. The sleeves 8 may be dispensed with.
