Abstract
477,328. Tube expanders. CHOBERT, J. F. G. May 19, 1936, Nos. 14220 and 14221. Convention dates, May 20, 1935 and April 3, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] In an expander for hollow rivets &c. an expander spindle 4 is intermittently moved axially by a reciprocating member to which it is clutched for movement in one direction. The spindle 4 is mounted within a carriage 70 with wedge openings 71 housing balls 72. The carriage is reciprocated by hand or power means. In moving in the direction f<1>, the balls clamp and move the spindle, the carriage afterwards returning freely in the direction f<2>. At the limit of travel of the spindle 4 it contacts a stop 75 which is displaced to withdraw and free the balls to release the spindle. In a modification, the spindle is threaded and co-operates with an oscillated split nut. In a further modification, split conical bushes are substituted for the balls. Wedge devices may be fitted for preventing movement of the spindle in the direction f<2> during the working operation and for locking the spindle at the end of its working stroke. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the head of the spindle engages and frees a spindle-locking device at the end of its working stroke.
