[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In mechanisms employing pistons arranged radially about a common driven shaft, such as aero or other internalcombustion engines or steam engines, the piston rods are connected to one of a number of members interposed between the rods and the shaft, each point on each interposed member describing a circle the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the circle described by the remaining points of the same member, and the sum of the diameters of the circles described by the various interposed members being equal to the piston stroke. In a star engine, piston rods n are connected to a floating ring i, the points of attachment being adapted to describe circles of equal diameter, and the member i is connected to a second member g attached to the frame f of the engine. A driven shaft a has a double bend providing two crank-pins c, e. The member g is mounted on the pin c and is constrained against rotation by cranks h; the member, g therefore moves about the axis of a but its vertical diameter is always vertical. Similarly, the member i moves about the axis of a and is supported from the member g by cranks o. The members g, i are in the form of similar triangles with centres at the crank-pins c, e, the corner points of g being connected by cranks to f and the corner points of i connected by cranks to g. The crank-pins of the cranks h are coaxial with the crank-shafts of the cranks o.
